Vacation Day 13. Last day
Why Vieques again?
I started out the vacation wondering just that! And, now at the finish of the vacation, I remember so fondly on just why we will always return to Vieques-definitely not every year, but eventually.
For starters their are lots of practical reasons. The kids don't need a passport which they don't have. Vieques is a safe island and is reasonably accessible. Vieques is still afforable with accommodations that are dream worthy and beaches that can't be beat. And, while I have every opportunity to practice a bit of Spanish, I also almost always have someone who can speak English and help a girl out.
And, then their are the real reasons.
We get to listen to the coqui sing all night long. And, this trip the cows moo and last trip the roosters crow and before that....)
We like unpaved roads. Every time we hear of roads being paved and easier access to this beach, we sigh. We love taking unknown paths (even when we get in trouble) that lead to nowhere in the hopes of the one secluded perfect beach.
We like limited options. No McDonalds or Target--thank God. Grocery stores with an odd assortment of items--love the challenge. No resorts--whew, nature still abounds!
Not much to do! Sure there is no putt putt golf, or movies, or malls. Instead, as a family, we get to search for iguanas, tarantulas, geocache treasure chests. We get to swim, and snorkel, and swim in the glowing biobay. We get to cook our dinner together and fall asleep early from exploring nonstop all day long.
Vieques is NOT the place for everyone. I would certainly hesitate in recommending to almost anyone. But if it finds a place in your heart, it will never leave. Thanks Vieques for another year of unbelievable memories! Until next time...
